Reverse engineering the human brain

چکیده
Advances in the physical sciences often foster advances in the biological sciences. In this paper I deal with just one of those many contributions and describe a trail that leads from Faraday’s discovery of electromagnetic induction to a technique called transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), which can be used to temporarily prevent the brain from carrying out some of its normal functions. The `lead time’ between Faraday (1831) and TMS (1985) was over 150 years, clearly longer than any Department of Trade and Industry would like. The path shows how scienti c disciplines can interact, and, in the case of TMS at least, how the scienti c concepts were always ahead of the technology. Having shown how much the use of the technique owes to other strands of investigation, I outline some of the advances in understanding brain function made by using TMS, and, in particular, the improvement it makes upon electrical stimulation and studies of the e¬ects of brain damage. Finally, I make three predictions about the contribution that the technique will make to further discoveries in the 21st century.

Reverse Engineering the Brain
Reverse engineering the brain will require a deep understanding of how information is represented and how computation is performed in the brain. What are the functional operations? What are the knowledge data structures? How are messages encoded? How are relationships established and broken? How are images processed? How does the brain transform signals into symbols? How does the brain generate...
متن کاملLinking Brain Biology to Intellectual Endowment: A Review on the Associations of Human Intelligence With Neuroimaging Data
Human intelligence has always been a fascinating subject for scientists. Since the inception of Spearman’s general intelligence in the early 1900s, there has been significant progress towards characterizing different aspects of intelligence and its relationship with structural and functional features of the brain. In recent years, the invention of sophisticated brain imaging devices using Diffu...
متن کاملReverse-Engineering the Human Auditory Pathway
The goal of reverse-engineering the human brain, starting with the auditory pathway, requires three essential ingredients: Neuroscience knowledge, a sufficiently capable computing platform, and a long-term funding source. By 2003, the neuroscience community had a good understanding of the characterization of sound which is carried out in the cochlea and auditory brainstem, and 1.4 GHz single-co...

Introduction: Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) is an imaging method in which light source and detector are installed on the head; consequently, re-emission of light from human skin contains information about cerebral hemodynamic alteration. The spatial probability distribution profile of photons penetrating tissue at a source spot, scattering into the tissue, and being released at ...

Brain injuries that caused by strokes (result of intra partum ischemia) are a frequent cause of prenatal mortality and morbidity with limited therapeutic options. Transplanting human mesenchymal stem cells (hmscs) indicates improvement in hypoxic Ischemic brain injury (HIBD) by secretion growth factor stimulating repair processes (Hmscs) known as multi potent cells which isolated from bone marr...

Background: Histone deacetylation plays an essential role in transcriptional regulation of cell cycle progression and other evolutionary processes. Several results confirm the importance of the latest found HDAC11 gene to deacetylate histone core in neurons and their supportive cells in developing the vertebrate Central Nervous System (CNS). Objectives: This study investigates the HDAC11 pote...
